STUDENT FOOD SHOP

The very first food shop at university can be quite daunting, with no parents around to watch what you eat it can be quite difficult to save money and stay healthy.
I am going to be sharing with you some of the tips I have learnt during my 3 years at university.

Student Food Shopping Tips

1. Make a list: Before starting your weekly food shop sit down and figure out your budget and what you’re going to be eating for the rest of the week.

2. Online food shopping: This is the best way to organise what you’re buying, it’s convenient and if you combine your shop with a house-mate you can cut the delivery charge by half. Discount codes can also be used before you place your order online, for example you should try using My Voucher Codes , Money Saving Expert and mysupermarket

3. Frozen food: The frozen aisle becomes your favourite aisle in the supermarket, frozen meat (such as chicken breast) and frozen vegetables are often dramatically cheaper when frozen. However, it is good to have fresh chicken/meat and veg in your diet.

4. Branded food: Back home my mum usually shops at Tesco, starting university I was so used to the branded food my mum bought. In first year I shopped at Asda because it was closest supermarket to my accommodation and was still kept buying the branded food that I am used too. It wasn’t till second year when I stopped buying branded food and that was because I had moved houses and now the closest store to me was Aldi.

Definitely took a while to adjust, but one thing I noticed was the price difference. I spent around £50 on food to last me 2 weeks at Asda at Aldi I would spend £20/25. Bigggg price difference!

5. Buy in bulk: Buy in bulk! At the start of the first term my mum always does a shop for me at Costco, she buys bottled water, pasta, tin tomatoes, sanitary towels, etc in big quantities. It’s so much cheaper that way and usually lasts me a whole semester.

So there you have it, my tips on saving money whilst food shopping!

smaller sizes can sometimes be a good deal. Do the math, either on your phone or with your calculator
